FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM
The Foster Grandparent Program is a partnership between limited income adults and children who need extra attention. By spending up to 40 hours per week together, they create the intergenerational bonds that build a community based on respect and understanding. Foster Grandparent presence in schools, child care centers, shelters, hospitals, and Head Start programs give youth the one-on-one attention that many parents and teachers often do not have time to give.
Currently there are 100 Foster Grandparents serving approximately 300 children in Lafayette, Iberia and St. Martin, and a small portion of St. Mary Parishes. The program is funded by Corporation for National & Community Service. Benefits to the program volunteers include, but are not limited to: A nontaxable stipend, pre-service and in-service training, transportation reimbursement, volunteer insurance, an annual physical exam, recognition and social events.
